my roots

I became a dietitian because food has always been at the heart of my life. I grew up on a mix of Tang, Wonder Bread, Pop-Tarts, and my mom’s Japanese home cooking—where the “food of astronauts” met the flavors of tradition. My mom, originally from Japan, often indulged my siblings' and my TV-commercial-inspired cravings, yet every evening, we gathered as a family over a homemade meal.

My dad, born and raised in Hawai‘i, had a deep love for ‘ono (delicious) food. In our home, food wasn’t just nourishment—it was a way to connect, celebrate, and create memories.

Then came the hippie movement, with its focus on natural foods, challenging my view of the benefits of the processed foods I had grown up with. Later, my dad suffered a heart attack, and I was fascinated by how changing his diet played a crucial role in his recovery. That experience opened my eyes to the power of food—not just as a source of pleasure but as a tool for healing.

Dietetics became the perfect path for me, combining my love of good food, my fascination with biology and cultures, and my passion for helping people.

I’ll be honest, I’m walking the same road as you. I’m busy like you with family and community obligations and expectations that easily squeeze out healthy eating.

Several years ago, I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Knowing I was on track for diabetes, I turned to research and made lifestyle changes—some easy, others challenging. I understand firsthand what it takes to change habits and take control of my health journey.
